Triptych, Ripatransone

The Civic Art Gallery in Ripatransone houses a triptych by Vittore Crivelli, whose panels were originally part of a much larger polyptych. The Madonna and Child with Saint Lawrence was first seen by Amico Ricci in 1834 in the church of San Benigno, who attributed it to Carlo. Later, Marquis Bruti Liberati saw the two panels, placed next to a Saint Mark, in the church of Santa Cecilia in Ripatransone.

The panels were attributed to Vittore Crivelli during the 1905 exhibition in Macerata. The dating of the work is a very critical issue and, according to Luigi Serra, the panels could be linked to the end of his brother's career, but references to Vittore's works suggest a date earlier than 1489.

The central panel depicts the Madonna seated on a throne holding the Child. The woman is wrapped in a golden cloak with thistle motifs painted in blue pigment. The Child Jesus is depicted blessing and holding a golden sphere.

Saint Lawrence is depicted holding a red book in one hand and the gridiron symbolizing his martyrdom in the other. On the opposite panel is Saint Mark holding the Gospel in his hand, with a lion at his feet.

Vittore has placed a red carnation on the step of the central panel, an element that alludes to the Virgin.
